Follow Zebulon Pike’s Legacy on a Hike through Sackets Harbor

Posted on April 11, 2025

Saturday, April 26, 2025, 1pm to 3 pm,

Starting at the Union Hotel Building 401 West Main St., corner of Ray St.
Sponsored by the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site and Sackets Harbor Heritage Area Committee

On National “Celebrate Trails Day,” join us to honor the legacy of Brigadier General Zebulon Montgomery Pike.
Pike’s Peak is named in his honor!

The self-guided route weaves its way through the village.
Stop at the historic site’s Union Hotel building to pick up a suggested hike map and free Pike sticker.

Visit Pike’s monument in the Military Cemetery, Fort Pike Park in Madison Barracks, and the historic site’s navy yard.
At each stop, meet soldiers of the Ft. Drum 10th Mountain Division Mountain Sappers 41st Engineer Battalion.
These soldiers are Sackets Harbor’s Snap-Link partners.

During the War of 1812, Pike served at Sackets Harbor.
On 27 April 1813, he led the raid on York, Upper Canada (Toronto), where he was killed.
First buried at the Sackets Harbor navy yard (today the state historic site)
Second, reburied in the ‘new’ Madison Barracks cemetery c. 1820.
Again buried in 1909 in the relocated Military Cemetery off Dodge Avenue.

This event is free and open to the public.
Join us honoring Pike’s legacy on National “Celebrate Trails Day.”
